| Notes | Paul Lukas won the Oscar this year for this film. Bettie Davis. Film Noir about spies escaping Nazis. What is not to like? Except it is kind of a meh. The whole film is an excuse to delivery essays on the virtues of freedom and democracy delivered via unrealistic monologues. The topics and questions are worthwhile, but this is a classic case of show, don't tell. In this film, it wouldn't shut up. Apperently Davis took on the project to lend her star power, as she thought that the message was important. It is just unfortunate that Lukas beat out Bogart for Cassablana this year. |
